Paul Semple... at a glance

This page is intended mostly for those people who knew Paul, or those who knew of him. Paul lost his life June 22, 1992 at around 10:40pm. This unfortunate incident happened when he, Pat Armstrong, and myself heard a woman screaming outside our apartment in Toronto and went to help. In the ensuing moments, we chased off three men that were attacking the woman, but Paul was stabbed with a knife to the heart.

The men responsible were brought to justice (well, at least as far as the law is concerned...) and two of the three are currently in prison.

Paul was awarded the Governor General's Award for Bravery, which was presented in Ottawa in the Spring of 1996.

Well, that's a VERY brief description of why I've put this page up, so here's some of the pics I promised.

This is one of my most recognized shots of Paul. It appeared on the cover of most Canadian newspapers (June 24, 1992), and inside many American ones as well. It's nothing more than a shapshot I took to finish off a roll of film after a basketball game, but it turned out really well, and shows Paul as he really was... relaxed and easily approachable.

Rush 2112

This photo of Paul was one of my most challenging and difficult projects. If you're a Rush fan, you'll recognize the image from the 2112 album. The character represents an innocent and naieve man who lives in a communist-like society where he is not allowed to think or decide for himself. The rulers (in The Temple of Syrinx) believe that the population is not smart enough or not interested enough to make their own decisions. The photo tries to show the opression of this character under this government (the red star). Although it was awkward to shoot, Paul was willing to help, and I am proud of how well it turned out. It is even more fitting now, because Paul himself symbolizes the innocent and oppressed.

Just to show you the other side of Paul... WACKY! Here, he's holding cutouts of Pat and myself for a 2nd year photo A/V show (ironically, in one of the other photos, we asked him to stab a cutout of Pat with a pocketknife... and it's almost in the same spot Paul was stabbed. That's eerie!)

Well, Paul was a sentimental too. He really wore his heart on his sleeve, but women never seemed to trust that... They usually thought he was just trying to get something from them. This one was taken on the TTC (subway) after a friend kissed him goodbye.

This was the result of a photo project I put off till the very last minute. A character portrait was due the next day in class, so I told Paul to "Go smear vegetable oil on your face and soak your head." He's the only guy I know that would do that without asking questions (yes, he did look at me strange, though!). It's hard to see at this low resoloution, but he looks like he's just worked out for a couple hours. I got an A+.

Paul when I first met him (or shortly thereafter) in first year photography. This was probably in the lecture portion of our Studio class.

Just another quick snapshot of Paul in the lineup at Lick's (a burger joint). Notice the moon pendant he's wearing... he loved that (he had it custom made). His mom had it made into a brooch and wears it to remember him.
